This neighbourhood takes its name from Hurontario the main arterial roadway that runs through this neighbourhood. This stretch of Hurontario was farmland until the present day neighbourhood was developed in the late 1980s. The last vestige of rural Hurontario can be seen at Britannia Schoolhouse and Farm, a 200-acre green space, bordered by Hurontario St., Bristol Rd., McLaughlin Rd. and Matheson Blvd., and owned in trust by the Peel District School Board for educational use. This site features an old farmhouse, time-weathered barn, a gentleman’s Georgian homestead and a historic schoolhouse.

There is ongoing new home construction taking place in this neighbourhood.  It has a high population density with many condominium buildings and townhomes packed into a relatively small area. This is a hustle and bustle neighbourhood that enjoys the convenience of being situated close to all the amenities at the nearby Mississauga City Centre, situated just to the south of Hurontario. Easy access to Highway 401 make this neighbourhood an ideal choice for commuters.

Heartland Town Centre located at Mavis and Britannia is an outdoor shopping centre occupies 2,200,000 square feet of space and has 180 stores, making it is one of Canada’s largest malls. There are also smaller shopping plazas in Hurontario located along the major arterial streets that offer convenience type stores as well as restaurants and food shops that reflect the cultural diversity of this neighbourhood.
